Devon secrets to whet your appetite

  • Devon proudly boasts its maritime history, and rightly so. Having given the world Sir Walter Raleigh, it is also partly responsible for bringing the potato to our shores. Why not celebrate that fact by eating chips alongside some locally caught fish in one of Devon's many unspoiled harbour villages. Both Brixham and Lynmouth provide beautiful locations to eat world-class, locally-caught produce. Or if you're tired out you could always bring them back to eat in the comfort of your holiday cottage!
  • If that doesn't fill you up, why not partake in a traditional Devon cream tea, made from locally produced clotted cream. Alternatively, dairy fans may prefer to get their fix from some of the region's fantastic cheeses, including cheddar made in Exeter and of course Devonshire cheese - which is also available deep fried with gooseberry sauce for the truly dedicated!
  • We wouldn't advise you get your sea-legs after all that, so the next best thing might be to visit the full-size replica of Sir Francis Drake's ship: 'The Golden Hind', docked in the harbour at Brixham - easily accessible from most of Devon's holiday cottages.
  • Active holidaymakers can tire themselves out by walking and cycling The Tarka Trail, over 180 miles of looping track, taking in some of Devon's most scenic locations. After all that exercise, why not visit one of Devon's many historic castles. Home to Spanish tapestries, wild deer and acres of rolling greenery, the castles would often house prisoners in their medieval heyday - which will make you appreciate your holiday cottage even more!
