- When you consider that the Peak District has provided inspiration to the works of Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Wordsworth, DH Lawrence and Beatrix Potter, amongst others, you would be forgiven for thinking there might be something in the water. And you wouldn't be the only one. St Ann's well in the spa town of Buxton has attracted visitors for years due to the supposed healing powers of its geothermic water. And even if it doesn't inspire your literary leanings, at the very least you'll be well hydrated, should you choose to do something a little more active.
- The Peak District has a range of pursuits that take advantage of its varied landscape. From hiking through the Peak Forest, cycling across the Dark Peak, horse riding down the Longden trail, to potholing and caving in Dovedale, there are plenty of ways to explore the region. And if you really want to get away from it all, you can even take to the skies in a hang glider from Bradwell, or ride a cable car to the Heights of Abraham in Matlock Bath.
- In fact, from the amount of activities on offer outside of your holiday cottage in the Peak District, you'd be forgiven for thinking the locals have no interest in more relaxing activities, such as fine dining. But nothing could be further from the truth. As well as produce native to the region, such as Stilton cheese (made exclusively in Hartington), Ashbourne gingerbread and Bakewell pudding, you can get a range of mouth-watering organic foods, delicious smoked goods and fantastic honey at farmers' markets throughout the region.
