Shropshire secrets to whet your appetite

  • Due to its reputation as the 'Birthplace of Industry', Shropshire has a network of working waterways and railways that make navigating the area a joy. Set in the heart of a delightful market town, Ludlow Castle is a glorious monument to the medieval age and well worth a visit. More recent but no less impressive is Brunel's Ironbridge Gorge, a magnificent bridge that has stood over the river Severn since 1779.
  • The Offa's Dyke path is a more rural, equally man-made attraction. Roughly marking the border between England and Wales, the border used to be the scene of many a conflict. Thankfully, the only disagreements you should witness today are between errant dogs and their owners. The Dyke itself allows walkers to take in some of the region's most beautiful surroundings and, if you fancy a bit more info, you can cross the border and visit the Offa's Dyke Centre in Knighton.
  • More popular, but no less historic, Shrewsbury offers visitors the chance to explore one of the UK's finest medieval market towns. Shrewsbury Abbey is one of the most popular attractions, in part for being a beautiful Benedictine monastery but also for inspiring the Cadfael novels. In a town with over 600 listed buildings, you won't be short of architectural eye-candy in Shrewsbury but you may be more interested in the annual flower show, one of the UK's largest that takes place every year.
  • You may have worked up an appetite just reading about the options when you rent a holiday cottage in Shropshire, so perhaps now's a good time to talk about the food! Ludlow is a Mecca for foodies, with Michelin starred restaurants several AA Rosette starred eateries and a fantastic annual food festival. As a town, Ludlow is a believer in the 'slow food' movement, which promotes food comprised only of ingredients from the local eco system. And once you sample its wares you'll probably have no other choice but to believe in slow movement yourself!
