- Castles and fortresses once guarded the entrance points to Sussex, and are still one of the first ports of call for those on a holiday cottage break in the region. Battle Abbey in East Sussex was the site of the Battle of Hastings in 1066 but thankfully is far more civilised today. Now run by English Heritage it offers a family friendly way for visitors to explore one of history's most famous events. Arundel Castle, in West Sussex is a slightly grander affair, with a beautifully restored fortress surrounded by 40 acres of lush gardens and grounds.
- More typical English holiday experiences are on offer along the coast. Brighton and Hove are one of the UK's most popular seaside destinations, offering shingle beaches, delightful promenades, bars, restaurants and nightclubs. If you fancy a more tranquil coastal experience then the white cliffs of Beachy Head, close to Eastbourne, offer great walking opportunities and spectacular views over the English Channel.
- If you fancy a tranquil way of exploring all the surrounding beauty on your holiday cottage break in Sussex then we'd recommend the Kent and East Sussex railway. A delightful 10 mile journey between the National Trust castle at Bodiam and Tenterden, you'll find plenty of comfort on the steam train, not to mention a dining carriage and a host of themed events running throughout the year.
