- The Severn Valley Railway is perhaps the best way to explore both the land and the history of Worcestershire. The delightful steam train ride is worth the price of admission alone, but you'll also find some beautiful towns and villages along the way, not to mention a host of themed events on the railway.
- The city of Worcester itself combines contemporary city attractions with a wealth of historical interest. You'll find great opportunities for shopping in a compact city centre but also beautiful landmarks, such as the gothic spires of the cathedral, towering majestically over the River Severn. Closer to earth, you'll also find public parks that were former sites of conflict during the civil war, but are now, thankfully, a bit more tranquil. A few miles out of the city you'll find a museum dedicated to Elgar, composer and one of Worcester's most famous former residents.
- Worcestershire's fictional history is equally rich. Radio 4's The Archers may well be set in the fictional village of Ambridge, but its inspiration is rumoured to be in the - very real - village of Inkberrow. Stop off for a drink at The Old Bull and you'll not only be in 'The Bull' from The Archers but you'll also be in good company - Shakespeare is rumoured to have stayed there when on the way to pick up his marriage certificate. And while that may not sound like the healthiest start to married life, we can't argue with his taste.
- Another famous writer was enamoured with Worcestershire. JRR Tolkien allegedly was so inspired by the unspoiled greenery of the county that it inspired him to create the Shire in The Lord of the Rings books. So it stands to reason that one of the best, and most appropriate, ways to explore the region would be on foot. The Malvern Hills makes for great hiking with a number of trails to suit all ages and abilities. Though, unlike hobbits, we'd recommend sensible footwear.
