Destinations / England / Yorkshire
- Holiday makers (not to mention wizards, vampires and explorers!) have been entranced by the wonders of Yorkshire for hundreds of years. And with over 40% of its county covered by National Parks, you won't have far to wander from your holiday cottage before you see an enchanting view.
- But before you choose Yorkshire for your cottage holiday, you may want a few suggestions for activities. So let's go!

- The majestic North York Moors is one of the main reasons people choose a holiday cottage in Yorkshire. Spanning an area of 554 square miles of beautiful, heather moorland and rich, green pastureland, a walk across the moors is one of the best ways to experience the beauty of this idyllic area. There are 2,300km of paths and tracks to explore, which cross the heart of the moors and reach the beautiful coastland.
- The Vale of York is perhaps less popular with visitors but certainly no less beautiful and grants a fantastic opportunity to truly escape from it all for those on a cottage break in the area.
- Stay in a Yorkshire holiday cottage situated near the coast and you get the best of both worlds. As well as miles of heritage coastline, you are situated near the coastal towns of Whitby and Scarborough. Whitby is famed for its famous visitors, both real (Captain Cook, Lewis Carroll) and imaginary (Dracula) and there are tributes to all three in the town. Culture vultures may prefer to visit Scarborough, which is leading the way in becoming a digital town, and hosts a number of cultural events such as art exhibitions, concerts and festivals.
- And if you've walked or cycled to the coast then you may not be relishing the trip back to your holiday cottage. However, help is at hand. The Yorkshire Moors Railway is a steam train ride from Pickering to Grosmont and now extending to Whitby. Passengers can enjoy a leisurely ride across the moors - with the option of an onboard meal. You may want to look up from your table when the train reaches Goathland, as the station featured as Hogsmeade station in the Harry Potter film, and the town itself was the location for the popular TV series Heartbeat.
